Should You Repair or Replace Your HVAC System?

HVAC systems lose efficiency as they approach the end of their lifespans. As a trusted HVAC company, we here at Perfect Degree HVAC often get asked by clients: should I choose an HVAC installation or repairs?

When to Choose Repairs

If the HVAC system is still within its expected lifespan (or just a year or two past), then your go-to solution should be repairs. During this period, problems like clogged drain lines, damaged ductwork or issues with electrical components aren’t caused by age and can be repaired by a certified HVAC technician. Also, your HVAC warranty may still be active during its expected lifespan, so resorting to a replacement would be premature. Well-maintained HVAC systems that have just passed their warranty periods aren’t that old and can usually be repaired at cost.

Signs You Need to Replace Your HVAC System

There will come a time when repairs won’t be as practical for your HVAC system. The following signs are indicators that you need to prepare for an air conditioner or heat pump installation:

Your HVAC system is more than 12 years old — HVAC systems are expected to last 10 to 12 years, and they begin to show signs of aging as they pass this threshold, such as becoming less efficient and consuming more energy. While they’re still repairable, this isn’t a permanent solution. Replacement parts may already be phased out and difficult to obtain, which can make repairs even more difficult.

Repairs are becoming too frequent — An HVAC system usually requires no more than two repair appointments in its lifetime. If you find yourself needing to call for repairs more frequently, then a replacement would be more practical, as repair costs can quickly add up.

Your home becomes too humid during the summer — Cool air is a natural dehumidifier. If your home feels humid during the summer season even when the air conditioner is turned on, then you need a more efficient air conditioner.
