Signs of Poor Indoor Air Quality

Indoor air can be up to 70 times more polluted than outdoor air. And if you don’t address this issue promptly, poor indoor air quality can affect not just the surfaces in your home, but your family’s health as well. Coughing, sneezing or allergic reactions. Poor indoor air quality can result from a lack of ventilation, which is usually the reason behind respiratory issues like coughing. Furthermore, without proper air circulation, fresh oxygen inside your home decreases, so you’ll eventually be left breathing in dirty air. Sneezing or allergic reactions (watery eyes, irritation of the nose and throat, etc.) may also be due to contaminated indoor air. If you’ve been coughing, sneezing or experiencing allergic reactions throughout the year, you might want to have a professional look at your ventilation system and see how it can be improved.

Dust buildup. When dust accumulates on your air filters and around your vents, the amount of pollutants in your home naturally increases — which lowers your indoor air quality. Regular cleaning usually helps manage dust buildup, but HVAC contractors may also recommend upgrading your air filters to fix dust problems in your home.

Hot and cold spots. If there are hot or cold spots in your house, these could indicate a problem with the airflow in your air conditioning system. Have a technician check your air conditioner, as there may be an underlying issue that’s creating uneven temperatures in your home. Typically, hot and cold spots are the result of dirty air filters, blocked registers or leaking fluids in the AC system.
