If your furnace is generating loud, unusual noises, it’s critical to determine where the sounds are coming from in order to resolve the problem. Noises in the unit can suggest a far more serious problem or perhaps even damage. Noises can be caused by a variety of components, each of which produce a distinct sound.
You probably won’t be able to correctly diagnose every furnace sound at the drop of a hat unless you’ve had professional heating repair training in the past. However, if you inspect the source of the sound and the type being produced, you can get a good idea of what the problem is. However, there are a few simple repairs that any homeowner can tackle on their own.
Lubricate. Furnaces have various moving parts to help them work properly, including blower wheels. If the blower wheels are broken, the furnace will squeal. When this happens, just use lubricant to help loosen the wheels. Regular maintenance is required to keep it clear of clogs. To prevent damage, grease the wheels once a year.
Security panels. Rattling noises can be caused by furnace troubles. These sounds can be the result of a loose screw or panel. If you hear rattling, switch off your furnace and check all screws and panels. This should take care of the issue and restore regular air conditioning system operation.
Ventilation. Low return airflow causes high-pitched noises. If you hear a noise, open your vents. Closed vents may be the basis of the problem, increasing pressure on the ductwork. After you open the vents, you may need to get your ductwork cleaned to remedy the issue.
If your furnace still makes excessive noise after replacing the filter, call in the pros. Serious repairs require mechanical expertise. Certified HVAC contractors can diagnose and repair a noisy furnace so you can sleep soundly.
